THE
AUTUMN LEAVES OUTSIDE MY WINDOW
FALL CONCERT SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
Anthony Wilson/Chico Pinheiro Quartet@Jazz Bakery 09.04.08
By George W. Harris
Local guitar star Anthony Wilson celebrated his dad Gerald
Wilson's
90th birthday by giving the proud papa an evening of first rate
progressive Brazilian jazz with the upcoming star Chico Pinheiro.
Backed by bassist Hamilton Price and South American drummer Edu Ribeiro,
the two guitarists filled the evening with fast-paced soloing that was
framed by complex and intricate melodies. The fascinating part of the
evening was in observing the contrasting approach to Wilson's and
Pinheiro's respective playing. Wilson would take a kinetic song like
"Cafe con Pao" and stretch the melody with long linear single
note
runs, while Pinheiro would strum hard edged chords in support. When it
was the Brazilian's turn to solo, like on the gently swaying "Easter
Monday", he'd rely more on strumming chords. On this tune, the pulse
would be gentle and calming, but on a driving tune like "Irriqieto
(Unrequited)", the rapidity of the full toned frets was like a stampede
in Madrid. The ricocheting support by Price and Ribeiro kept the music
at a fiery and intense mood the entire evening. Afterwards, papa Gerald
was beaming in disbelief, "How did you guys make such a big sound?"
he
asked. He wasn't the only one wondering this torrid evening at the
Bakery.
