The Good Hours
Claire Vision Productions
By George W. Harris
Here's a young lady vocalist that has an alarmingly mature
delivery.
Mix Anita O'Day's timing with a young Sarah Vaughan's sense of
dynamics, and you get a feel for why she sang with T.S. Monk's sextet
awhile back. She's able to let loose with some linguistic dexterity on
the fly-by-the-seat "Love You Madly" and "That Old Black
Magic", both
of which feature some nimble vibes by Warren Wolf.( who also plays
piano on the disc). Her rich a chestnut voice is evident on the stark
and striking "You Go To My Head", and the confidently strutting
duet
with Wolf on "I Only Have Eyes For You." She seductively plays
behind
the beat laid out by Erik Privert/b and David Brophy/dr on the boppish
"Stairway To The Stars", pulling the lyrics like an Abba Zabba.
Lots to
like and adore on this welcome release by a lady whose name is likely
to rise faster than inflation.
