Obi Best seems to be the latest in a series of "quirky chick" singers.
Eschewing the reliance on the usual sensual, angry or cynical qualities
that make up the vast majority of female vocalists, Best fits more into
the "sociology/English lit major" type of misfit girl who would rather
have a night out with her friends at Caribou Coffee than a fling with
some unknown hookup. Her voice stays in the midrange, as if she were
giving off her remarks as you were walking down the street with her.
The tunes are a cornucopia of of eclectic sounds and rhythms, fully
textured with keyboards, guitars and various electronics. Keyboardist
John Wood is the anchor leg on this sessionn, providing excellent
support. Fans of Sia will have a friend in this lovely eccentric lady.
