Noah
Preminger Group
Dry Bridge Road
Nowt Records
By George W. Harris
For his debut
disc as a leader, 22 year old tenor saxist Noah Preminger
has put together a formidable band for some provocative post bop jazz.
Heavy hitters like pianist Frank Kimbrough, guitarist Ben Monder and
trumpeter Russ Johnson make up for a formidable front line of soloists,
along with Ted Poor (dr) and John Hebert (b). Preminger has a drier
than Sahara tone, which fits in well with the Marsh/Konitz ballad "Sax
Of A Kind". Swinging, but with a bit of an edge are tunes like the
self penned "Luke" and "Rhythm for Robert", which
also features some
fiendishly clever guitar soloing by Monder. Some rapid fire drumming
leads to a bit of chaotic interplay by the leader and Johnson on "Today
Is Okay", and the going gets really bumpy on the white knuckler "Real
Nice", while the bluesy interplay between the two is impressive on
Dave
Douglas' "Blues For Steve Lacy." Forward thinking music with
the
genesis of some good ideas
