Milton Nascimento/Jobim Trio
Novas Bossas
Blue Note Records
By George W. Harris

Vocalist/Guitarist Milton Nascimento has been putting out this kind of first class Brazilian music since his classic debut of “Courage” back in 69. One of the true originals from the Golden Era of Bossa, when it really was Nova, Nascimento joins up with the Jobim family (Daniel/p and Paolo/g) and, along with drummer Paulo Braga and bassist Rodrigo Villa, cleverly revisit some of the classic originals and some fresher stuff as well. “Brigas Nunca Mais” has Nascimento’s warm and rich voice boring through the loping and lilting beat, while Dori Caymmi’s gloriously expressive “O Vento” and Jobim’s “Esperanca Perdida” is satisfyingly melancholy and hopeless. The band asserts itself on “Chega De Saudade”, and during the whole disc, Nascimento’s voice, is frighteningly dynamic in range and depth. He’s touring around right about now ( Disney Hall Oct 29 and UCSB Oct 30), so definitely look for him with this rollicking band.
