THINGS WE DID LAST SUMMER-
JAZZ CONCERT HIGHLIGHTS
Karrin Allyson@Catalina’s 06.07.08
By George W. Harris

Vocalist Karrin Allyson came into town featuring songs from her newest release “Imagina”. If you’ve ever seen Ms. Allyson before, you know that she really doesn’t need an excuse to shift into the Brazilian gear, as she always features something with the bossa beat. Supported by the all star rhythm section of Larry Koonse (g), Tom Warrington (b) and Todd Strait (dr), Ms. Allyson got the place swaying with her earthy reading of Jobim’s “ A Felicidade” and “So Tinha de ser Co Voce”. On Paul Williams’ “Stay (Outomo), with Koonses guitar gently strumming, Allyson treated the pleading lyrics with unrushed and relaxed tenderness. Accompanying herself on piano, she turned the room into a juke joint on 12th and Vine with Kansas City renditions of Hank Mobley’s “Turnaround” and a strutting “Right Here Right Now.” With the band clippity clopping in support, she sweetly wisped through Joni Mitchell’s “All I Want” before closing with a caressing “Say It (Over And Over)”. Whimsical and warm, Allyson dazzles with down home charm.
