If you like your Great American Songbook delivered like a Broadway
show, then you’re going to love the debut release by vocalist Ashley
Brown. Her voice, particularly on the lush ballads like “My Funny
Valentine” and the title track, have a dash of Barbara Streisand when
she was, well, Streisand. There’s also a dash of Disney musicals in her
sound; you can almost hear Belle from “Beauty and The Beast” on the
insouciant “If I Were A Bell” and “I’ve Got The World On A String.”
Delivering one of my favorite ploys, she includes the introductions to
tunes like “Saturday Night Is The Loneliest Night Of The Week” which
gives an added theatrical trailer to the music, while her voice and
drum duet introduces a revamped “Smile” with daring and adventure.
Great pitch, great delivery, mixes up the fastballs and curves, and
completes the game with ease. Good first outing on the mound!
