Alto saxist Miguel Zenon is one of the more important of the younger jazz stars. Each of his releases always seems to sound important. Last year’s “Esta Plena” was on just about everyone’s top ten list. This one, which features more woodwinds and less percussion, is even better.

Zenon emphasizes material from his native land of Puerto Rico, giving a gentle jazz tinge to lovely and romantic melodies. His alto has never sounded richer, and he keeps the mood level and level headed. The regular team of Luis Perdomo/p, Hans Glawischnig/b and Henry Cole/dr is augmented, but not overwhelmed by a luscious orchestra conducted by Guillermo Klein. Zeno glides in and out of evocative serenades like “Juguete” and “Amor” that feel like an evening sea breeze. Other tunes like “Olas y Arenas” feature chiffon-like drapery, which floats over and around Zenon’s saucy sax. Excellent music for the mood to be wooed.
