Marcus Shelby
Orchestra featuring Faye Carol & Kenny Washington This ambitious
disc is themed by the inspirations and impact of Dr. Martin Luther King’s
civil rights movement from the 60s. Mixing new material such as “Trouble
On The Bus” with church material like “Amen” and “Take
My Hand, Precious Lord,” Shelby wisely emphasizes the religious
foundation of the movement. The band itself has a rich and vibrant sound,
particularly on “Trouble On The Bus” with some impressive
trumpet work by Darren Johnston and Mike Olmos” while “Birmingham
(Project C) includes Evan Francis’ tenor to excellent effect. Vocals
by Carol on “Take My Hand…” and Jeannine Anderson on
“There Is A Balm in Gilead” are delivered with passion. Inspiring
without being pedantic.
