Clay Ross
Entre Nous

By George W. Harris
What do you
get if you cross indie-pop with gypsy jazz? Well, it might
be close to this disc, as guitarist vocalist Clay Ross puts out an
interesting mix of bohemia and modern angst. Along with Edward
Perez/b, Tim Keiper/dr, Rob Hecht/fiddle, Itai Kriss/fl, Will
Holshouser/accordion and some guests, Ross has music that can swing
like the Hot Club of France or groan like Switchfoot. Of the former,
“Street Sweep” has Hecht swinging to music that even quotes
Ellington,
while Kriss’ flute floats on
“Kosovo” and “Computer Crash.” Ross’ guitar
playing is folksy yet
impressive, and his vocals on “Starwood” and “Sixth
City Waltz” are
akin to the present generation of subdued singers. Lots of music for
one simple disc.
