This pianist Randy Klein has been quietly building up an intriguing
catalogue. He usually does solo improve recordings, but here he’s
expanded by doing a series of alternating duets with Russian
saxophonist Oleg Kireyev and American trombonist Chris Washburne. The
result is an intimate and sensitive collection of originals that is
highly lyrical, creative and intriguing.

Klein sets the tone with romantic musings, with a dash of playfulness
on tunes like “Hiding Out” and “I Caught You In A Lie” in which
Washburne’s autumnal horn glistens like a sunrise in a hazy morn.
Kireyev’s tenor, particularly on “Fly Free” and “Truly Yours” is Ben
Webster breathy, rolling in like a fog at Fisherman’s Wharf. The
overall result is like eavesdropping on the deft back and forward late
night conversations between friends. More complex than simply a
background music, but not overpowering like a shouting match, the music
is comfort food for the ears.
