It’s hard to figure out if you’re supposed to take the vocal trio The
Puppini Sisters seriously or not. They’re pretty popular in their
native England, delivering campy pop material like The Andrews Sisters,
but with a sonic tongue seemingly in cheek. Their first couple of
releases mixed originals with nostalgic/Depression era/WWII material,
while this latest is a tribute of sorts to songs from the 40s and 50s
Silver Screen. Catchy takes of “Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friends” or
“Get Happy” have some exciting moments, while a tongue twisting take of
Bridgette Bardot’s “Moi Je Joue” reveals some real vocal chops. Some
surprises that will make them rise out of the self-parody are a reading
of The Godfather’s “Love Theme,” a take of “Moon River” that includes a tad of The Nutcracker Suite, as well as a chilling take of “Moon
River.” If you have absolutely no female vocal group albums, this isn’t
a bad intro at all, but eventually you’ll want to go down the road that
takes you to the Eternal City of The Boswell Sisters.
