Irish blues/rock guitarists get short shrift here in this side of the Atlantic. Eagle Rock Records just put out a ton of Rory Gallagher material, which should at least start piquing your interest, but this cd and dvd that features 6 stringer Gary Moore should solidify it. He had a career in Ireland that goes all the way back to his days with Phil Lynott-pre Thin Lizzy. This gig from 2010 (he just died in Feb of 2011) has him in inspired form, playing songs with infectious Irish/Scottish musical themes as well as lyrics that reflect his county’s heritage of war, valor and honor. His team of Neil carter/key/g, Jon Noyce/b and Darrin Mooney/dr mix electric guitar riffs such as on “Military Man” and “Oh Wild One” with riveting blues like “Parisienne Walkways” as well as some acoustic material like “Johnny Boy.” Moore’s voice is classic gutsy tenor, sweating bullets on each lyric. The dvd has the extra bonus of a handful of songs from 1997 in Montreux as well. Exciting music, and an artist who will be missed.
