Kneebody
You Can Have Your Moment

I get a little worried around the edges when a cd from
a band boasts that 80% of its members include
“effects” as part of their instrumentation. Free thinking
band Kneebody does an impressive job, however, of combining the swing
and joy of jazz with just enough of Ornette Coleman waywardness to keep
you hanging in there. Comprised of Adam Benjamin/Rhodes, Shane Endsley/tp,
Kaveh Rastegar/b, Ben Wendel/sax, and Nate Wood/dr, the band mixes complex
rhythms and meters in a hand-is-quicker-than-the-eye fashion (“Call”
“High Noon”) while also delivering almost anthem like themes
on the rambunctious “Held.” Almost all of the songs have horns,
strings and drums going back and forth into the forefront and background,
with the riffing of Endsley and Wendel ranging from Basie to Art Ensemble,
sometimes in the same song! Catchy as well as sticky!
